Two huge wraparound leather reclining sectionals face off around a round ottoman, so the whole crew can pile in for movie night on the big wall-mounted TV. It all opens to the dining table and a full kitchen, with French doors out to the deck.

Launch at one of the two boat ramps at Scofield State Park, then cruise over and tie everything up right in front of the house for the rest of your stay. Scofield sits at nearly 7,600 feet on the edge of the Manti-La Sal National Forest, so summer days stay cool and there's more to do than one trip can hold. Bring the boats, the rods, the bikes and the trailers.

A quiet town with a story worth knowing.

Scofield was founded in 1879 after coal was found in the hills above Pleasant Valley, making it one of Utah's first coal towns. By the turn of the century it was a busy mining community, its workforce made up largely of immigrant families from Finland, Wales, Scotland and beyond.

On the morning of May 1, 1900, an explosion tore through the Winter Quarters No. 4 mine just above town. At least 200 men and boys were killed — some in the blast, many more by the toxic afterdamp that followed. Nearly every family in Scofield lost someone. The Luoma family alone lost six sons.

It was the deadliest mine disaster in America at the time and remains the worst disaster of any kind in Utah's history. The tragedy pushed the country toward the mine-safety and rescue practices that protect workers today.
